…and other fashion blunders

As far as I can remember, my first fashion blunder happened in the third grade. I stood up to respond to my French teacher and was feeling really confidant (I was a really great French student). My teacher gave me a quizzical look and started making awkward motions at me. I had no idea what she was trying to convey or if it was even me she was trying to comunicate. She likely got frustrated since I couldn’t understand her subtle gestures at which point she made a zipping motion. I don’t know what students saw and I didn’t know how long it was undone but that was a humiliating moment. I’m sure there are many more times this happened to me in my life but I think I’ve gained a little more confidence where I can shrug it off.

In eighth grade tear-aways were the hot fashion item (in eighth grade I was also a tomboy). I assume you know where this story is going. I was hanging out after school playing football with the guys (while the girls giggled from the sidelines). The girls thought it funny to rip my tear=aways off while I was getting a drink of water. At this time I hadn’t yet realized that one should always wear shorts under these pants. There I was on the football field in my blue frilly underwear. I don’t remember wearing tear-aways ever again.

A few years ago I’d bought a pair of J Brands; they were so lovely. A few days after I’d bought these J Brands they ripped. They ripped in an awkward spot: not at the crotch and not anywhere near a stitching. My natural reaction was to cry about my weight but had my mother to reassure me that the jeans were just defunct. The retailer replaced these jeans citing that it was a common issue (you’re selling jeans that rip after one wear?).

I’ve since bought another few pairs of J Brand denim and panic all day at the thought of them ripping all over again. I suppose this is why I make sure to have cute, lacy undergarments these days rather than those dreaded frilly blue panties from eighth grade.
